Our track of the week is from Greenock’s own Anthony McElwee. His newest single ‘Waiting For The Sun’ was recorded and produced by Anthony himself.
We had a chat with Anthony about his new single.
What influenced you to write ‘Waiting For The Sun’?
Waiting for the Sun is one of a handful of songs I wrote as a student at WCS Greenock. I can’t say there’s a main influence for the song, I was messing about with the chord progression and sang the words “but its okay” which you hear in the chorus and the song wrote pretty much wrote itself. The lyrics were the main focus during the writing phase and I see as a poem transformed into melody, the overall process took about 20 minutes which is the fastest time period I’ve wrote a song in.
How have you found the reaction to your new single?
I love the reaction the song has received and appreciate it greatly. I was self conscious about the release as it is my first self produced song. The song has been compared by all my favourite influences which I will answer in the next question.
Who are your biggest music influences?
My biggest influence in music are The Beatles. Further down the food chain is UK indie which are mainly the usual bands like The Rolling Stones, The Libertines, Arctic Monkeys, Donovan, Syd Barret of the early Pink Floyd and The Doors. I also love hiphop and originally MC’d under the alias CRAFT before becoming a singer-songwriter.
What do you have planned for the future?
My plans for the future is to be gigging around Scotland and hopefully the rest of UK. I am forming a session band for live gigs. Writing and releasing songs, building my online profile and network. Follow me on twitter @anthonymcelwee
