TRACK OF THE WEEK: THE HEAVY NORTH – ‘NO GOOD’.

Our ‘Track Of The Week’ is from Liverpool’s very own The Heavy North. We were lucky enough to chat to Ste from the band about the track.

You’ve just released ‘No Good’, how have you found the reaction to the song so far?

The reaction so far as been amazing, especially from the online community. We weren’t too sure what to expect following the release of our last single Darkness In Your Eyes back in April, as we were blown way with the support for that track and it’s always difficult to choose a follow-up single – but No Good has been really well-received so far.

What inspired you to write the track?

No Good is a bit of a change to what people expect from us, and the song has been described as ‘a bit moody’.

No Good is about the different stages of the breakdown of a relationship, and the lyrics describe changes in behaviour, and those feelings of doubt, regret and frustration that can often follow.

We were fortunate enough to work with Liverpool-born actor Bobby Schofield and filmaker Dan Hewitson at Freakbeat Films on the music video for No Good, and they’ve done an amazing job of capturing the feel and inspiration behind the track.

How would you describe the sound of your music to people that haven’t heard you before?

When we first started out, a local reviewer in Liverpool described us as ‘Dive Bar Blues’ which later became the title of our debut 4-track EP. We think that sums us up quite well, but The Heavy North’s sound as also been described a soulful garage rock.

What do you have planned over the coming months?

We’re putting the finishing touches on our debut album ‘Electric Soul Machine’ which is now available to pre-order on limited edition 12″ vinyl and CD. Although it won’t be released until January 2022, we have a few more singles from the album that we can’t wait to share over the coming months.

We’re also excited to return to playing live shows, and we have a short run of UK dates in October and November which include our first ever shows in London and Birmingham.

What’s your favourite moment as the band?

There’s been some great ones in the short time we’ve been together! Although it was during the pandemic, having the opportunity to play the 11,000-seater M&S Bank Arena in Liverpool last August for the Liverpool Digital Music Festival was definitely a highlight – even if the arena was empty!

Another one of our favourite moments was releasing our first ever 12″ vinyl, our 4-track EP Dive Bar Blues. Holding our debut record, posting copies around the world and then seeing the response from people was amazing, and we hope our fans and followers get behind our debut album Electric Soul Machine in the same way!

What up and coming artists are you listening to?

There’s an overwhelming amount of great new music from across the UK at the moment, and some of the new bands we’ve discovered during the pandemic include Liverpool bands and artists Mondo Trasho, Cult Icon, Columbia, Mexican Dogs and Michael Robert Murphy.

There’s also some great bands with new music on the way like The Mysterines and The Fernweh who are definitely worth checking out!
