This week our ‘Track of The Week’ is from the wonderful False Friends. We had this fantastic band play one of our last shows before the pandemic and we have loved them since! A couple of weeks ago they released their latest single ‘Such Good Weather’ and it’s everything you need!
We were lucky enough to catch up with Jonny about the track:
What inspired the new track?
Such Good Weather came out of the first lockdown. I (Jonny) had moved back to Ireland for the first few months to get my head straight and began to write again after a long batch of writers block. Mentally I wasn’t doing the best and a lot of the songs written then kinda reflect that. The song kinda came out of me remembering growing up that when people opened up about mental health they’d have an answer of “sure how could ye complain in a day like that” and I do think that’s a very local town thing to say and I guess a very local town why of thinking about your mental health. So the song bases itself entirely in the realm of hoping that the weather can help you and the fear of if it doesn’t, where is the help gonna come from.
What was the writing process with the track?
I was living with my Mum and every day I would go out and lock myself in her shed until I had a song. This one day was the hottest day of the summer (which kinda helped inspire the title) and because of that, it meant the shed was unbearably hot. So it was actually written pretty quickly once the chorus was down. The verses all came pretty quickly. I’d say I was in and out of the shed that day in about 30 – 45 mins. But it was in the studio where I sat and tinkered around with new lyrics or phrasing to help shine it up. It was nice to have a few months to think about what would needing changed and kinda going into it with a clear mind that wasn’t being tortured by the scorching heat.
How have you found working as a band during lockdown?
It’s definitely made us rethink our entire way of working. As I said, I did the first lockdown in Ireland while the rest of the band were in Glasgow and then as we went into the second lockdown Anna & Fearghal moved to Ireland and I moved back to Glasgow. Meaning over the last 8 months we’ve constantly been in different countries. But what came out of that is the set up of our drummers studio (Little Studios) and us basically learning how to record and mix all by ourselves which has became a massive game changer for us and something I think now we’ll be constantly doing. I will say the distance is definitely difficult. But the skills we’ve learnt because of those hurdles, feel like something that’s gonna entirely change how we as a band approach our new music, which I think is really cool.
What do you have planned over the next coming months?
We’re playing our first show back at Party At The Palace on the 7th August in Linlithgow. Which I am both terrified about and so excited about because our last show actually was probably for Timeless promotions in March 2020…so we’re probably gonna have to relearn our set and then figure out how to play the new songs live…which will be eventful.
We also have a lot more songs planned in the pipeline, so this is just the start to what we have in 2021 for fans.
What up and coming artists are you listening to at the moment?
Personally at the minute I’m in love with the new albums by “Flyte” & “girl in red”. Been constantly playing them and sitting obsessed with the lyrics on both albums.
Also a massive shout out to Orla Gartland. Started listening to her a while back and just seen she’s announced her debut album which I’m ridiculously excited about. Her song Zombie has probably been my track of the year so far.
If you’re wanting somebody in the Scottish scene though, that Posable Action Figures album is absolutely out of this world, can’t wait to see them live to hear how they even do some of the sounds on that record.
