TRACK OF THE WEEK: KENDAMA – BELIEVE IN ME.

This week we have picked the AMAZING new Kendama track ‘Believe In Me’ as our ‘Track of The Week’. It is the perfect tune to be released at the start of a sunny bank holiday and we have been playing it all weekend.

Formed in 2019, Kendama have achieved a massive amount including sold out shows across Glasgow. Their new tune incorporates funky synths, a catchy chorus and an amazing beat to get you dancing. Here’s what Kendama had to say:

You’ve just released your new single ‘Believe In Me’, how have you found the reaction so far?

It’s been awesome! We’re actually really thrilled that people like it, considering we’d been away for almost a full year it’s nice to know that people are still looking out for us releasing music. We’d recorded it with our friend Mark Morrow in Edinburgh before lockdown and just held it back until we were ready to release. Now seemed like the best time and here we are!

What inspired you to write the track?

The track was inspired by being at your lowest point, having absolutely zero self belief and not really knowing where to go. I was having a conversation about what to do and the person I was speaking to just said “well if you don’t believe in yourself, how about you believe in me? I think it’s awesome and you should keep going”. It was really inspiring to have someone else put faith in you when you have none. After about twenty minutes the song was written and it’s been in our live set ever since. Now we are getting around to releasing the fully produced version which is exciting!

How have you found releasing music during the pandemic?

Very strange… We’ve always seen ourselves as a live band and the tracks we release being almost an reason to push our live shows out to people. So, with no live shows to push, what do we do now? During lockdown we released a track called ‘Wine’ (again produced by Mark) that we’d played a few times live and had gotten a good response. So we thought… well, why not? A pal of mine Scott is an amazing animator so we asked him to create a video for us that we could all work on in isolation and the results were amazing. I think that really helped spur it on. It rekindled that fire that had been simmering away.

What’s next for you?

Coming up we are finally getting around to live again! Party at the Palace in August and working toward our own headline show in Glasgow around the same time. Live has always been something we focus on as a band so we want to make it an experience to welcome everyone back to gigs again. Outside of that, working on a video for Believe in Me and we have some more material recorded so those tracks will perhaps make appearance soon too…

What up and coming artists are you listening to at the moment?

KennyHoopla is amazing, would definitely suggest to everyone who enjoys pop punk to give him a listen. Mod Sun has a song called ‘Amnesia’ that is living rent free in my head at the moment too. Scottish bands specifically, Vukovi are always great, as are Lo Rays, Beirut, happydaze and Hannah Slavin. Loads of really amazing music about at the moment.
