TRACK OF THE WEEK: ‘DON’T GO THERE’ BY GALLIA.

Our ‘Track of The Week’ is new single from the stunning Gallia. ‘Don’t Go There’ was released on Friday and it is the perfect pop hit! We’ve had a chat with Gallia about her new single.

We were lucky enough to see Gallia perform in Liverpool before lockdown and were blown away! ‘Don’t Go There’ is infused with hooks, beautiful harmonies and passion. Here’s some questions we asked Gallia:

What inspired you to get into music?

My Dad has always loved music but it was something that he never got the chance to do himself. My favourite film as a child was Annie, and I had a karaoke CD of all of the songs that I used to take on our family holidays and my Dad and I used to duet them! I started to learn the piano when I was 10, which was great because I started to learn to read music and understand it from a fairly young age. My Dad listens to a lot of country music and my Mum loves everything from 80’s to Black Sabbath, so the music in my household was really varied as I was growing up which has really influenced the music that I write and the stories within it!

Who are your biggest influences?

Musically, artists that I take a lot of influence from are L Devine, Selena Gomez, Lizzo, Taylor Swift – all Queens!!!! I love artists that are 100% themselves, and the confidence of these artists is hugely inspiring!

What would you say ‘Don’t Go There’ is about?

Don’t Go There is a warning song to another woman about an ex-boyfriend! It’s based around a situation that happened to me a few years back where my boyfriend-at-the-time gave me a valentines day gift. In the giftbag was a ring which was too small for me. He then went to his car and pulled out an identical gift-bag with a larger version of the same ring inside. Obviously, I questioned the second gift bag and his face instantly dropped – he’d been caught out! He wasn’t only cheating, but had 2 relationships at the same time and neither of us knew about each other!

What was the process behind writing ‘Don’t Go There’?

I started the song with the ‘hook melody’ that you hear play throughout the verse. I found that sound and wrote that line and once I’d produced the first demo, I actually produced a few different versions of the track with and without that line, and ended up going back to the original sound, playing it throughout the verse! I wrote the song in the order that you hear it – I started with the verse and shaped the story. I wrote this song pretty early into the first lockdown, and I wanted to set myself the challenge of releasing a song that I’ve written and produced completely myself. This was the final result!

What other up and coming artists are you listening to just now?

I’m listening to a lot of L Devine, Emily Burns, Frances – lots of strong, female pop! My friend AmyElle is absolutely smashing it at the moment and her music is great!

What can fans expect from you in the future?

Lots more new music, including a lot more that I’ve produced myself! Only 5% of music producers are female, and I want to be part of the movement to change that! Fingers crossed gigs will be back in full swing too and I can announce some live shows – I can’t wait to get back out gigging!
