Our ‘Track of The Week’ is new single ‘Heartbreak High’ from Nottingham’s James Burt. We’ve had a chance to chat with James to hear all about his latest single which you can find at the end of the article. James has been produced by the likes of Al Groves (Bring Me The Horizon and Cast) and has been featured on BBC Introducing Nottingham.
‘Heartbreak High’ is the perfect combination of the 80’s synth and modern pop. It incorporates quirky guitar hooks, lovely synths and pop vocals. If you love 80’s music then this tune is perfect for you.
Here’s some questions we asked James:
You only began your music career last year, how has it felt developing as an artist during such a difficult time for the music industry?
During the second lockdown, I began my music career, which was a unique time to release music. Despite the restrictions on not being able to play live shows, it has taught me how to promote my music digitally. It has been a precious time for learning new skills. During the lockdown, I produced my latest single and a music video all from home. However, I am excited about restrictions easing so I can play live shows.
You have released your second single ‘Heartbreak High’, what was the inspiration for writing the track?
My inspiration was to prove to people that I’m capable of as a songwriter and a producer. I wanted to define my sound, bringing my vision to modern pop music and sounds of the 80s. Going into this track during the lockdown, I didn’t have the comfort of working in a studio with musicians like I did with my debut single. This release taught me how to adapt and develop my skills to produce a song and a music video from home. It also taught me that you can still collaborate with talented musicians even if you’re not in a studio.
The first single you released was produced by Al Groves (Bring Me The Horizon and Cast), how did it feel working with such a massive producer on your first release?
When I was selected to record a single with Al Groves at my University, I jumped at the opportunity straight away. Working with Al Groves was an extraordinary experience. I’ve never worked with a producer before, so I was nervous about working on my music with someone I have never met before. Thankfully, Al was one of the most down to earth people I have ever met. Not only did he get the best out of my ability that week, but we also had a laugh, and I felt comfortable the whole time we worked together. He is a super talented individual, and I will never forget the experience of making a record with him.
It’s clear you take a lot of inspiration from the 80’s not just musically but in branding as well, who else influences your musical process?
I aspire to any creative or artist who achieves success through dedicating everything to their craft. I love seeing people’s passion shine through when they work on something they love.
My musical idols range from older artists such as George Michael, Bruce Springsteen to more modern artists like Charlie Puth and Harry Styles.
What up and coming artists are you listening to at the moment?
A few of my favourite up and coming bands are The Crying Violets and The Chase from Nottingham.
